Ferrari at Mille Miglia

A thousand miles to a sports jacket.

The Mille Miglia was once the world’s most dangerous road race, immortalized by Federico Fellini, when drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Alberto Ascari and Mike Hawthorn would drive for 1,000 miles on the wild back roads of Italy over the Appenine Mountains from Brescia to Rome and back, in then new sports roadster factory racing cars. Check out the history at Mille Miglia Museum in Brescia. Today, the race is now more a timed road rally and a chance for classic sports car owners and drivers to take the exquisite old machines out of the garage and drive on the open road. A charge of adrenaline I once had the brief occasion to experience with a press pace and an ordinary rental car, racing on the public roads among the Ferraris, Lancias and Mercedes, being waved to speed on through the intersections and traffic circles of tiny Italian villages by the Carbonieri. The Mille Miglia event is more an excuse to party and see one of the largest collections of magnificent vintage sports automobiles in one place, as they were meant to be seen, running and all so alive.

The Mille Miglia has a new online shop for official merchandise and a Facebook page. If you can’t make it to Brescia Italy in the spring for the annual three day weekend race to Rome and back, you can still sport a windbreaker or cap with the official logo and pretend you did.
